IOANA IERONIM’s „Triumph of the Waterwitch” (translated by Adam J. Sorkin and published in the UK by Bloodaxe), was shortlisted for Oxford’s Sir Weidenfeld Prize. Her poetry has been published widely in Romania and in some other ten countries. She is also a translator and a theater artist and has created multimedia performances in cooperation with composer Dinu Ghezzo and writer Saviana Stanescu. She was Romania’s Cultural Attaché to Washington DC in the 1990s and a Fulbright program director in Bucharest.
SAVIANA STANESCU has published books of drama and poetry including Diary of a Clone (translated by Adam J. Sorkin); poems in journals such as: Poetry London, Metamorphoses, Exquisite Corps, Pen Club magazine, The Temple, Watchword, Absinthe, and The Saint Ann’s Review. Recent New York productions include YOKASTAS (directed by Richard Schechner) at La MaMa Theater, AUROLAC BLUES at HERE Arts Center(published in Plays and Playwrights 2006) and WAXING WEST and LENIN’S SHOE at The Lark Theatre. Saviana holds an MA in Performance Studies and an MFA in Dramatic Writing, both from Tisch School of the Arts, NYU, where she now teaches in the Drama Department.
NICOLAE TZONE is the author of several collections of poetry. He is featured in „The Handbook of Literature,” an anthology of Romanian poets of the 1990s. He has edited over ten volumes by distinguished avant-garde authors (including Tzara, Urmuz, Vinea, Ilarie Voronca, and Gherasim Luca). He is the founder and director of the Vinea Press, an award-winning publisher of poetry and avant-garde literature, as well as the founder and president of the Institute for Research of the Romanian and European Avant-garde. “A poetical earthquake generating powerful metaphorical waves that overwhelm the shores of the reader’s consciousness with a Tzonami of delights.” — Adam J. MIHAI URSACHI, one of Romania’s most eminent writers, died in 2004 at the age of 63. He was Romania’s nominee for the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2001. In 1992, Ursachi was awarded the first national Mihai Eminescu Poetry Prize since World War II, and he also won recognition from the Romanian Academy and the Romanian Writers’ Union, among others. Ursachi defected from Romania to the United States in 1981 after enduring imprisonment and solitary confinement for an earlier escapeattempt, but he returned after the December 1989 revolution and assumed an active role in his chosen city of Iasi in the northeast of Romania. In 1998 he published a notable career retrospective, Madness and Light, from which most of the poems in this book were translated.

One of the world’s leading performers of George Enescu’s music, Romanian-born Sherban Lupu studied at the Bucharest Conservatory with George Manoliu. While a student he performed throughout Eastern Europe and on Romanian radio and television. Mr. Lupu left Romania to study in London at the Guildhall School of Music with Yfrah Neaman, and he took lessons and masterclasses with legendary violinists Yehudi Menuhin, Henryk Szering, and Nathan Milstein as well as with Norbert Brainin of the Amadeus String Quartet and Sandor Vegh. Lupu has won prizes in numerous competitions such as the Vienna International, Romanian National String Quartet, Jacques Thibaud in Paris, Carl Flesch in London, Royal Society of Arts, and the Park Lane Group Contest. Subsequently Lupu came to the United States to study with Dorothy De Lay and, at Indiana University, with Josef Gingold, and receive chamber music coaching from Menahem Pressler. Mr. Lupu is currently professor of violin at the University of Illinois and has been artistic director of the Gubbio Festival in Italy and associate concertmaster of the San Francisco Opera.
