In JUNE at the Romanian Cultural Institute

May 30 – June 3 | Montreal, Canada
ON THE ROAD: RCINY IN MONTREAL

In an exploratory trip of the performing arts scene and opportunities of cooperation in Canada, the Romanian Cultural Institute will take part in the large annual conference of IETM, the largest European-based network of contemporary performing arts. IETM will bring together, for the first time outside Europe, more than four hundred performing arts professionals – artists and directors, producers, programmers, and managers, allowing for incredible opportunities of encounter between European and North American theatre professionals, which will hopefully nourish the programs of exchange that the Romanian Cultural Institute has been supporting.

On June 1, Corina Suteu, Director of the Romanian Cultural Institute in New York and long standing member of IETM, will also address as a key panelist this year’s topic of the meeting: „Cultural Warming”. You can learn more about IETM and the Montreal conference at www.ietm.org.

June 4-23 | Lincoln Center Theatre
Ana Margineanu takes part in the Lincoln Center Theater’s DIRECTORS LAB

One of the most reputed Romanian theatre directors of her generation, Ana Margineanu was selected to be a resident of the LCT Directors Lab running in New York from June 4-23. The prestigious Directors Lab is a developmental program for nurturing stage directors from the US and around the world. The participation of Ms Margineanu benefits from the support of the Romanian Cultural Institute.

Ana Margineanu debuted in 2001 with the production of „Toxic Waste” after Matei Visniec at Monday Theatre. She received acclaim for her productions such as „89, 89… hot after ‘89” or „Vitamins” (both at The Small Theatre in Bucharest). Ms Margineanu is also part of the dramAcum program for supporting new Romanian drama. She has participated in many national and international festivals with the plays she has directed and won several prizes for best production.

Ms Margineanu has already presented her work in New York in 2006 at the invitation of RCI New York, and will return in August 2007 with the international hit „The Sunshine Play” (winner of the London Fringe Report Award for Best Play – Relationship Drama) and „Bucharest Calling”, both written by Peca Stefan, as part of the New York Fringe Festival. Starting June 6 | Film Forum (209 W Houston St, New York, NY 10014)
Winner of Camera D’Or in Cannes,
„12:08 EAST OF BUCHAREST” by Corneliu Porumboiu opens in American theaters

Don’t miss the theatrical release of Corneliu Porumboiu’s debut feature film, which opens on June 6 at Film Forum in New York, distributed by Tartan Film.

“A deadpan comedy that evolves into a wry, politicized examination of truth… reconfirms – on the heels of last year’s THE DEATH OF MR. LAZARESCU – Romania’s emergence as a budding cinematic mecca.” – Nick Schager, Slant Magazine

The whole country watched live on television as angry crowds forced Romanian dictator Ceausescu to flee Bucharest by helicopter. In a quiet town east of the capital, sixteen years since this historic day, a TV show commemorating the glorious revolution everyone wants to take credit for, invites some guests into the studio, joined by phone-in participants, to share their conflicting recollections.

Winner of the Camera D’Or in Cannes 2006 – the Director’s Fortnight, nominated for the 2007 Independent Spirit Awards – Best Foreign Film, part of the official selection of numerous international festivals among which Telluride Film Festival or Toronto International Film Festival.
See the trailer at www.1208eastofbucharest.com/trailer and visit www.filmforum.org for booking.

On the occasion of the film’s release in the US, RCI New York has initiated the DVD release of Corneliu Porumboiu’s previous film, „Liviu’s Dream”. Visit www.icrny.org soon for information on the DVD.
