Shining Through a Long Dark Night:
Romanian Cinema, Then and Now

Following a string of critical acclaim in recent years for the films The Death of Mr. Lazarescu, 12:08 East of Bucharest, The Paper Will Be Blue and last year’s Cannes Palme d’Or winner 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, Romania has emerged as one of the world’s most creative and cutting-edge filmmaking cultures. The Film Society of Lincoln Center and the Romanian Cultural Institute offer New Yorkers the rare chance to delve deep into that country’s rich artistic tradition in Shining Through a Long, Dark Night: Romanian Cinema, Then and Now, for 11 days at the Walter Reade Theater.

The series pairs eight recent films by contemporary directors with ten groundbreaking, pre-1989 movies, all screened in pristine new prints. Several artists and guests will attend screenings during the series, including filmmakers Dan Pita, Elisabeta Bostan, Iosif Demian, Mircea Daneliuc, Tudor Giurgiu, Ruxandra Zenide, Florin Mihailescu and Gabor Tarko, actor Dan Nutu and film critics Manuela Cernat, Alex Leo Serban and Mihai Chirilov.

You can meet them on Thursday, April 17, 7:30 pm, when the Romanian Cultural Institute in New York hosts a panel discussing the tradition of Romanian filmmaking and on Saturday, April 19, 11 am, for a press conference and interviews (in Romanian) at the RCINY Auditorium.

“Through this series,” says Richard Peña, program director at the Film Society, “we hope to introduce the lively—if frequently interrupted by censorship—tradition of Romanian filmmaking that forms the deep foundation for the current cinematic explosion that has led some critics to claim that Romanians have re-invented the art film.”
